ANALYSIS OF YAM PRICE INSTABILITY/FLUCTUATION IN NIGERIA (1981-2013) AN AUTO-REGRESSIVE DISTRIBUTED LAG (ARDL) TO COINTEGRATION APPROACH[]

This study focused on how the price of cassava (used as substitute), per capita income, inflation, exchange rate and per capita output of yam influence the fluctuation of yam price in Nigeria over 32 years period studied. Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach to co- inte-gration also known as bound testing was used to establish the co-integration relationship that exist between the dependent variable and inde-pendent variables. Secondary data used in the study were sourced from National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) statistical bulletin reports and Food and Agriculture Organization of united Nations statistic database (FAOSTAT). The result shows that the price of yam in the country was positively correlated with per capita income and price of cassava (used as substitute) while per capita output and exchange rate were negatively correlated in both short-run and long-run situations. Moreover, inflation in Nigeria was yet to be considered a serious factor influencing the price of yam over the studied period.

NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS OF MUSHROOMS AND IDENTIFIED CHALLENGES OF MUSHROOM PRODUCTION[]

Mushrooms are widespread non-timber forest resources and important member of the fungi group. Apart from their ecological function, they are cheap sources of food and food supplements. They are rich in protein, carbohydrates, lipids, fibres and other essential minerals for normal body functioning. Despite the importance of mushrooms, the production is basically hindered by three important factors namely, difficulty in getting quality spawns, pests attack and high cost of building sophisticated mushroom farm. Therefore, this paper reviews the nutritional benefits of mushroom and identifies the challenges facing its production.
