Mechanistic Modelling of Potholes development from cracks due to axle loads and time[]


The pothole is a major menace in our society, which has become a major safety hazard in road transportation. This made it necessary for researches into the causes of potholes and the establishment of models that quantifies the rate of development of potholes in relation to its causal mechanisms. The development of cracks and the formation of potholes are widespread problems in road construction and maintenance. The objective of this work is to modify an existing mechanistic model for the deepening of potholes developed from transverse cracks to compute the deflections associated with the effect of vehicle axle loads on potholes while incorporating time as a variable in pothole development and further deepening. A crack on a flexible pavement surface is a prerequisite for pothole formation and progression. Three types of cracks, namely, transverse, longitudinal and alligator cracks are seen from existing works, but the pothole developed from transverse crack has been taken into consideration in this work. The elastic modulus property of the subgrade material was also considered in developing this model as the performance of road pavement is not unconnected with the subgrade layer. The developed model was verified and was found effective to predict pavement performance with respect to pothole deepening due to cracks.
