What Can Writing Do in a Mathematics Class?[]

Integrating writing in a curriculum can be tasking for many but once used to it, this could be one of the best tools in demonstrating students’ conceptual understanding in Mathematics. The study determined the level and the extent of development of the mathematical thinking processes in the students’ journal entries and examinations in terms of conceptual knowledge, strategic knowledge, communication, and representation. A non-experimental research design was employed using mixed methods. The results showed that the longer the time the students were exposed to journal writing, the more their mathematical thinking processes were developed. Evidently, the most developed strand of mathematical thinking processes was communication and the least was representation. There were four identified benefits emerged, namely: a shift from passive to active learner; the development of mathematical thinking skills; upholding better informed future teaching, and a call for curriculum modification. It is recommended that journal writing experience can be enhanced through giving of authentic tasks that may reveal attitudes, anxieties and beliefs about mathematics that might be interfering with the students’ learning.

WORK STRESS AND PERFORMANCE OF UM TAGUM COLEGE FACULTY[]

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between work stress and performance of UM Tagum College Faculty. The respondents in this study are the faculty members of UM Tagum College, Tagum City. The sampling method used was the universal sampling wherein 130 faculty of Um Tagum College during school year 2013-2014 served as respondents. Through non-experimental quantitative research using correlational technique, validated questionnaire, Mean & Standard Deviation and Pearson r, results revealed that no significant relationship existed between work stress and performance of UM Tagum College Faculty.

The Paradox of Administration of Nationalities in Post-1991 Ethiopia: The Case of Benishangul- Gumuz Regional State[]

The Constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia allows each of the regional states with the legislative power to draft, adopt and amend their own constitution fitting to its own local circumstances. Thus, Benishangul-Gumuz Regional State (hereafter used as BGRS) drafted and adopted its own constitution. The 2002-revised constitution of the region vividly recognized the establishment of administration of nationalities as administrative hierarchy by replacing the former Zonal Administration.

Possible Persistence of Crude Oil in Remediated Sites in Gokana, Ogoni[]

The concept of potential trapping of patches of oil in permeable soils necessitated a revisit to a previously remediated oil impacted sites in Gokana. Incident of oil spillage by vandalisation of oil pipelines has been recorded in the area in which mechanical remediation was used for the cleanup. The objective of this study is to carry out a reassessment of the impacted sites using the results from a Gas Chromatographic (GC) fingerprint. Soil samples of varying depth (0-15 cm and 15-30 cm depth) were collected from two previously impacted sites in Gokana. Hydrocarbon analysis was carried out on the samples using a GC-FID for the aliphatic hydrocarbons and GC-MS for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; results show TPH concentrations increases with soil depth in the range of 1,026.23 mg/kg to 1,637.85 and 2,174.14 mg/kg to 3,689.13 mg/kg for the two sites respectively. Also, the lighter polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compounds (PAHs) were more abundant on the subsurface (15−30 cm) than the surface soil (0−15 cm) whiles the heavier polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons also increases with soil depth. Other aromatic compounds such as (Anthracene, Fluoranthene, and Pyrene) did not show any significant difference. The implication of hydrocarbon in the soil after remediation insinuates that, the hydrocarbon content of the soil at sites 1(BH1) and site 2 (BH2) for both surface and subsurface soils were all higher than the threshold value instituted by EGASPIN, which is 50.00 mg/kg. This infers that the remediation exercise was not performed to a satisfactory limit. The study divulges the possibility of potential trapping of patches of oil in permeable soils even after remediation.

Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 as apredictor of community-acquired pneumonia outcome in children[]

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) exhibits high mortality rates, Biomarkers are useful tools fordiagnosis, searching for antibiotic therapy, prognosis, and follow-up treatment.Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), also known as chemokine C-C ligand-2 (CCL-2), is expressed by monocytes, macrophages, lymphocytes, and airway epithelial cells in response to inflammation .The objective of the this study was to investigate serum levels of MCP-1 in a group of hospitalized children with community-acquired pneumonia, with emphasis on prognostic value of MCP-1 regarding patients' outcome.

The Impact of Decentralization of the Philippines’ Public Health System on Health Outcomes[]

In 1991, the Local Government Code of 1991 was constituted to commence, among others, the decentralization of the republic's health care structure from the national administration to local government units (LGUs). This was recognized on the concept that with decentralization, health system in the country would be strengthened. As the directive continued, past researchers concluded a system failure in the country’s health sector upon its implementation. To scrutinize the previous scholars’ suppositions, this study assessed the impact of the decentralization of the Philippines’ public health system on health state of the population.

Space Food Technology: Production and Recent Developments[]

Space food is a range of food products, especially created and processed for the utilization of the space explorers. The food must necessarily provide balanced nutrition for astronauts working in space, but at the same time it is important that it must be very convenient to store and prepare in the zero gravity environment. Since the space missions are of a very long duration, the food to be consumed needs to be processed and packaged in such a manner that it does not spoil in due course of time.
